One of our students at The Neighbourhood Cardiff, Dalia, writes about how life in the city has continued despite the lockdown.
COVID hit all of us unexpectedly, and you probably entertained thoughts of deferring your university offer and postponing your trip to Cardiff - but - here are the reasons why you should get on the first flight to Cardiff and choose the Neighbourhood as your new home, even through the strictest lockdowns.
Our building consists of spacious rooms, bigger than most of Cardiff's accommodations, and all rooms come with smart TVs and super-fast WiFi, so spending more time at your home during lockdown won't be that boring anymore. If you ever fancied having a hot drink with a snack after midnight, The Neighbourhood’s got you covered with hot taps in every room plus a handy drinks machines downstairs where you always can grab a bite and maybe spend some time in the private outdoor terrace.
The Neighbourhood isn't just a room, but a big family consisting of 35 nationalities. The diversity in the Neighbourhood makes it the perfect place for anyone to get exposed to different cultures. This family doesn't just consist of the friendly residents but starts with the nicest and most welcoming Neighbourhood team who are always up to help you 24/7 and have a chat with you whenever you need to.
You can also enjoy the variety of virtual events provided by the lovely team as movie nights, fitness classes, and competitions with exciting prizes. We can't forget the lovely Friday pizza nights that we can still enjoy from time to time through the lockdown.
The Neighbourhood isn't just the perfect home from the inside but it's also located amazingly around the city centre. Also, it's at the beginning of "City Road" which I like to call the "international road" due to the various international shops and eateries - luckily some of them are open even after midnight so no worries if you ever run out of food late in the night.
Once you step out of your new home, you will find The Neighbourhood bike hire station where you can hire a bike to start cycling. If you aren't sure about your cycling abilities, no worries, there is a handy bus stop on the other side of the building.
Maybe many cities lost their cheerful vibes due to the pandemic; however, Cardiff maintained its vibes with its beautiful landscapes and lovely people. You can start your day by grabbing breakfast from any of the multiple cafes which still offer takeaways then you can head to Bute Park, which isn't a long walk away from the Neighbourhood, or if you are fond of walking by the river and feeding ducks and birds you can head to Roath park which is a straight walk away from the Neighbourhood. You can also grab your skating board or skates and head to the outdoor Tiger Bay Barrage skate plaza.
Suppose you are a photo addict and like to take pictures in lovely places. In that case, you should go to Cardiff Bay with the amazingly architectural huge Millennium centre, or you can head to Alexandra Gardens, which is a lovely small garden near the town hall.
If you consider yourself athletic and want to try seeing more during the lockdown, it's always worth cycling to Penarth, a nearby town where you can have a unique top view of Cardiff or go down and have a dip at the pier.
I have covered the most common things you can do however there are lots of other things you can still do during the lockdown. So what are you waiting for!? Get your bags ready, get on the first flight and the lovely team will be waiting for you.
