So you’ve moved into your new student accommodation, met your new flatmates and are now looking for the perfect party destination to get your freak on! Cardiff has a seriously amazing nightlife, with an tonne of clubs and locations to try.
Head down to St Mary’s Street which our crew likes to call 'the crawl' for a heavy night out, or if you want to get dressed up take a walk up Greyfriar's Road to find a few classier joints like Tiger Tiger and Pryzm who both do students nights. In and around the city you can find really unique venues like the Tramshed, 10 Feet Tall, Buffalo or Live Lounge which are all worth checking out. The list really does go on and on, but to name you our favourites and introduce you to nightlife during your time living in Cardiff, here are our top five.
Kickin’ it old school! If you love everything 90s, the music and the iconic characters then Retro’s is the place to be. Wednesday’s is the night to get down there, located on the gorgeous Mill Lane you’re amidst the upcoming venues of the city. The bright orange club stands out with its amazingly friendly bar staff and funky mascots. You can spot Nintendo’s Mario and even get selfies with him while sipping champers or knocking back shots. Colourful and laid back, the throwback vibe is not to be missed!
Best for: the running man, vogueing, singing into your invisible microphone
Squad goals: pulling off the entire dance routine from Thriller
Dress code: anything neon or sparkly is a winner

Metros, otherwise known as Sweat-Ro’s, is a cool venue to visit for the rockers among you. Let your hair down, get your rock hands out and knock back some drinks because the atmosphere here is rocking! Listen to tunes like First Date, Last Resort and In Too Deep while head banging in the basement. Nestled right in the city centre you can’t miss the gathering of people outside the club chilling and mingling. The bouncers are a right laugh too as you pass them into the heat underground, where you’ll find tattooed staff offering shots in test tubes wandering around the dance floor!
Best for: moshing, head banging, rock hands, crowd surfing
Squad goals: this is just the warm up for the after party

Clwb Ifor Bach
Otherwise known as the Welsh Club, Ifor Bach is home to some sick DJ’s and numerous live sets. If you want to experience Wales like the Welsh then this club is definitely one for you. An indie setting for a chilled beginning to the night, you can settle in downstairs and get going on the dance floor. Before it all kicks off and the club is packed! Clwb Ifor Bach is really popular with the locals featuring drum n bass nights to ska and reggae sets. You can find it all in the little Welsh club.
Best for: leaning at the bar, swaying, bouncing and pogoing

Glam has a seductive feel with perfect mood lighting and that slow jamming R&B vibe. If you’re into your reality TV shows then this is the place to be - you can bump into stars from TOWIE to Geordie Shore. Take to the rooftop for a little cool down, sit under the fairy lights and feel the decking under your heels Ever wanted to watch your night back? Glam has its own filmed night, Therapy, which interviews clubbers the craziest questions during their night out.
Best for: grooving, bouncing, body rolling,

What? I hear you cry! Don’t fret, it’s pronounced 'goodie-who' which means owl. Fairly new to the Cardiff scene, Gwdihw has quickly made a name for itself with students in Cardiff and locals alike. A cafe bar by day and a slamming location by night, this is something a little different for everyone. Featuring live acts, pop-up street food and craft beers, here you’ll find dirty hip hop, sleazy beats and house that will all get your booty shaking. Described as ‘a little like a cosy, but very kooky living room’ its inviting and pumping wrapped all in one.
Best for: new music, live entertainment, craft beer
Squad goals: get good seats, Instagram your drinks, soak up the vibe
